What is Restorative Justice?

Indigenous communities around the world have a long history of living in alignment with certain values — accountability, connectedness, openness — and embodying those values in particular practices.

Those practices are for the building of community in the first place, for fostering balance and harmony within a community, and also for repairing harm when wrongdoing disrupts it. Justice is about more than what you do after something has gone wrong; it involves building a robust community that is capable of prevention as well as restoring what has been harmed. Present-day challenges in building healthy communities call for a revival of those values and those practices, and efforts to adapt them to various dimensions of our present society are called Restorative Justice.
